It occured to me today that if you really thought about it, saving the planet is impossible.
It’s too big of a problem. I want something more manageable. Something I can handle. Something I don’t have to always pay attention to either, because, let’s face it, I have other things I want to do.
A year, or more ago, I signed up for Natural Power. It’s a scheme where I have told my power company that, “I will pay more for electricity from (”green”) renewable sources”. It’s about 6 cents extra per unit.
I can handle that. I can say to people, 100% of my business and home electricity use is from renewable energy sources.
The scheme was so sucessful that the power company (Synergy) had to increase the rate because they couldn’t get enough Natural Power from their current suppliers so they had to buy it from other (more expensive) providers. Over East, I presume.
I like it because a) I get to feel good b) it doesn’t cost much and c) I helped send a message to the power company; that they should develop more “green” power producers.
Maybe the world will change after all.
