Call me the network crimp master! Today Atoning and I wired the new office.

First of all, it’s already been wired, but the previous owners cut ALL the UTP cables about a metre from the roof where the old hubs were. Brilliant! So, we had to find the cable that matched the connector on the office floor.

But first we had to figure out how to wire the damn things. So we pulled apart a not-to-be-used connector and figured the wire numbers from the piece of electrical board inside it. That was fun, not.

So now we know the wire colours for pins 1 and 8. Cool, we made a loop cable and plugged it into a close-by connector. After a few cables, buzz, we got ONE! cool, now we just have to figure out the exact cable to pin configuration. This was my job, so that figures.

Right! we have the colours and pins down pat, now we just have to find the single cable (from the 20-30) that goes to THIS connector. Sigh, this is going to take fore..buzz ooooer! found it. That wasn’t too hard. Right, so I wired that one and it’s friend. Now to build the server machine with the parts the boss just brought up.

Thirty minutes later I’m installing windows 95 onto the soon-to-be file server. Ok NT fans, don’t choke, it’s JUST to share files and an Internet connection. Jeez, you’d think you WANTED to have headaches. A little while after that and we’re plugging the computer into cables and testing that we can copy files etc. No worries! Done!

Then it was time to find the rest of the cable - connector pairs. Several hours later and we have it all mapped out and plugged in (and tested!) It’s seven o’clock. I want to go HOME! What do you mean after we crimp the rest of these cables (the ones we aren’t going to use straight away) FINE!

Got home about 8:00pm. Thank you Mr Jack, this whopper with cheese value pack is just what I wanted for dinner. I think I’ll let you do the cooking this time though.

Downloaded the Descent ]|[ demo, started playing about 10:00pm. Just a little game, I’ll just finish the first level.

It’s now 2:00am, and the demo has been finished. Argh! Is that the time? SLEEP

Nothing amazing happened today.

Well, okay, nothing I can remember.  So perhaps it was a really wild party or something, but I doubt it.

Oh, hang on!  I remember now.  Lysse came over.  Cooked a roast chicken for dinner and we watched the TV for a while.  The roast was GREAT! I was SOOO hungry and it WAS a cooked dinner, so I pigged out.

In the morning both of use were feeling a little sick (Lysse was sicker than me, thank you cast iron stomach).  We guess that the chicken wasn’t as cooked as it could have been, oh well.

Mostly work and more work today.

Although, I managed to put the washing out this morning and go to the bank before work.  So I guess I got some extra stuff done as well.

After work I went over to Mum’s place to have a chat to her about my current relationship status.  It was quite good actually, nothing like what I was expecting.  I even got dinner (chicken and sweet corn soup) out of it!  All in all a good day.

Then I remembered I had bought some Cookies & Cream ice-cream.  BWHAHAHAHAHA

Well today was a long, boring, hot day.

Work consisted of mind numbingly repetitive tasks, to be performed on a mind numbingly slow Pentium 90 with 32M RAM.  So, unfortunately, I have time to think in between cutting and pasting text.  And even more excitement was experienced during the “now format the paragraphing” section.  Such joy de vive!

Managed to get home through peak hour traffic in 30 minutes!  That must be some kind of record. Spent an extra 2 hours at home re-perfecting a client program to alphabetise the web page conversion utility I fixed up a few days ago.  These people are becoming troublesome!

Dinner was last nights pasta sauce with tonight’s spiral pasta.  Simple, easy and oh so tasty!

Well, finally a holiday!

Did some more organising today.  Then went over to Turtle Girl’s place to take her her presents.  Which she didn’t want (becaus she’s “too old for presents”).  Anyway, managed to have a long chat and fix up a few problems RE: Saturday night, so everything is back where it should be!

Ran around for a while at the local shopping centre not looking for anything in particular, just enjoying the air-conditioning and scenery <grin>.

Made pasta for dinner, early, and went to sleep early too!  I think I am beginning to become a work-a-holic.

Ran around like a chicken with it’s head cut off today.

Went to Fremantle to buy presents for bitch face Turtle Girl’s birthday.  When I got there, having just locked the car, Lysse rang me, to say she was going to be at my place early and would I be there in 45 minutes.  FINE!  Ran to shop to get present.  Drove home like a maniac (NOT speeding).

Lysse arrived, we had a talk and generally didn’t know what to do about the other person.  Soon enough we figured something out.  (perhaps I should make a members section??)  We went to watch  It’s a bug’s life which was really good.  Came home and fell asleep.

Today is the first day to rest.  Sleep.  Sleep.  Sleep, what the hell is sleep?

Managed to do lots today:  Vacuuming, Washing, Organising and Painting!

Vacuuming:  Mother dearest bought “US” a vacuum cleaner, so I get that! ‘cos Lysse isn’t here, right?!  Makes sense to me!  Okay, so I have this shiny new sucker, I thought I would give it a little whirl.  Did the entire house, sheesh!  Dunno how long it took me, but it kept me busy the whole time and that’s all that matters.  There was so much crap in the catcher I nearly sneezed my head off when I emptied it.  It’s a cool little machine, must remember to use it more than once a year.

Washing:  The Master of the Washing Machine presented a fine demonstration of cleaning power and finesse today.  Next showing - some time next week.

Organising:  Paid some bills (the ones with matching reminders!), sent out some invoices and generally cleaned up the bookkeeping end of the next (soon to be the size of) Microsoft Corporation.  That would be my business: slowly, slowly catchy wormy.

Painting:  FINALLY, after many years of saying I would, I have begun painting my computer box.  Black.  It’s a nice colour (okay! it’s not technically a colour but I think it’s nice, especially with 90% gloss finish).  I have converted the garage into a spray painting booth, something I have always wanted to do also.  It’s even got a shielded area for the actual spraying, so the paint doesn’t just go over everything.  I even put newspaper down before I started! FORE-THOUGHT!

Dinner was Chicken, with vegetables.  Not bad, ate half the chicken and put the rest in the fridge for tomorrow. Oh my GOD! I’m starting to think like a woman!

Went OUT tonight as well.  Yerrssshh OUT!  Was not in a mood to talk though, so succeeded in pissing of a good friend of mine (who’s birthday it was) even more than she already was.  Well, FINE!  I hate all the members of the opposite sex TOO you know.  Went to a few nightclubs, paid $2.60 for a teaspoon full of coffee (apparently an extra strong short black) which lasted 5 seconds.  All in all a pretty crap night.  Oh well, there will be other nights.

Woohoo!  The washing machine experiment was a success!  I put it on delay 6hrs around 12 last night, and WHAMO! it worked, washing started at 6.  Ok it woke me up, but I shut a few doors and slept like a baby till 8.  Hung the washing out first thing!  That was a mistake, nearly died from sunlight poisoning.

Last night was busy, didn’t sleep until 1am.  Had to fix a program for a client, so it would fix the problems caused by Microsoft FrontPage 98 (We meet again, Mr. Gates) sigh, the problem with clients is they want to do everything themselves, if they could do that, they wouldn’t be clients, would they!?  Anyway, problem fixed, scratch one for me.

So much work it’s ridiculous.  Three machines on the go at the same time, clients arriving one after another and one client didn’t turn up with cheque in hand!  Didn’t have a break until 3pm.  Finished off the last system and went home early! Hooray for me!

I was going to go shopping, but I got an e-mail from Lysse, which required attention.  An hour’s attention, during which I had a power failure, just as I was signing off, I might add.  This day is getting better and better.  Well, Outlook found the e-mail all the way up to the signoff!  (That’s one for you, Mr. Gates, but there will be other battles).  Now I can’t connect to my ISP.  Rang them up and they fixed the problem (booted my account).  Alas, I was still logged into their system.  All night in fact.  Stuff it, time for sleep.

Dinner was two chicken things I got from a chicken specialist deli place.  Stuffing wrapped in a chicken breast (or something) with all kinds of herbs and cheese on the outside.  Took ages to cook, even then the inside was raw, microwave time! Zapped it, and it was fine.  Must remember to take out the wooden spikes they use to hold them together next time, the first one was nasty.

Woke up early to buy cutlery!  Client rang just as I was about to leave, for a short question.  15 minutes later the time had been successfully changed on his machine.  Ok, so I get to Target and head for the house section…  $85 for the first cutlery set I see!  I only want to eat with it, not entertain the Queen! Ahh, found a set for $25, bargain!  Then I saw the $50 set, jeez, what’s the difference… oh, you can eat with the second set, the cheap set looks like pressed metal, stuff that.  Thank you stomach for reminding me to get forks and spoons that are wide enough to put food on.

Got to work 15 minutes late.  May the Y2K bug arrive early on that client! Lots of work today, two more systems and lots of installations.  Geez, you’d think these people wanted to give their money away.  It’s good tho, don’t have to think while building a system.

Oh goody, I got to do a 6:30pm on-site installation “on the way home”.  Yer, ok, whatever.  I get there, install the software and get ready to show the client how to get online and connect - click! - dial - …..  ??? Kept getting a Telstra message that this line can’t connect to the (STD) number.  The idiot’s got an STD bar on the phone! ARGH!  Well, now how to I convince him to hand over his $10k cheque? “Well gee, it WOULD work if this phone could call STD, so gimme the cheque and I’ll leave now” - almost worked, had to ring the boss to get him to talk to the client, I AM only a lowly technician after all, what would I know about computers?  Mental note - buy an easily concealable axe, for that extra special service, client brain insertion.

Dinner was a success!  Sausages in some kinda stew I found in the cupboard.  Made especially tasty with the use of knife and fork!

Gonna test out the washing capabilities of the washing machine (have to remember to pay the finance company some time this month)

Woke up early for some stupid reason.  Faxed work to say I would be late, possibly arriving around lunch time.  Fax didn’t work.  Of course.  Spent 30 minutes trying to send three more faxes to work, saying the same thing, they didn’t work either, thank you Microsoft.

Met Lysse to have a talk about what we are doing and how we came to be here, kinda late I guess, but need to see her.

Got to work more or less on time (according to the fax) lots of stuff to do, new system to build straight away, then a few installations.

Pasta for dinner.  It’s hard to eat spaghetti with chopsticks and a spoonthing from an Asian dinner set.  Lysse took the cutlery.  Must remember to get some knifes and forks before end of year, possibly tomorrow, before work.
